Getting Back Into the School Routine

Dread it or love it, kids have to go to school. Before you know it, the school bells are ringing and it’s time for the kids to head back. Do you have your back-to-school routine planned out? Here are some ways to make the transition from summer to school a little easier. Once you have a routine in place, your family will start the new school year on a bright and less harried note.

It will be much easier to decide what time your children need to go to bed if you know what time they have to get up in the morning. Most experts agree that children need between 9 and 10 hours of sleep each night to be at their best, while 8 hours is the absolute minimum. For example, if you know that your child must be up by 6 a.m. in order to be ready for school by 7:30 a.m., your children should be getting ready for bed around 7:30 p.m. Ensuring that your child goes to bed at the appropriate time means adjusting the entire day’s schedule.

One item you may want to purchase for your children at the beginning of the school year is a new alarm clock. By giving your child an alarm clock, you’re giving them some of the responsibility in getting up on time. Does this mean that you won’t have to nudge them to get them out of bed when school first starts? Absolutely not; in fact, chances are you’ll have to remind them over and over to get up, get dressed, and eat so that they can get to school on time.  But having an alarm clock like the BEDDI, your child can wake up to their favorite music and the simulated sunlight can help brighten the room awaking your child naturally. It may be best to wake children up early the first week or so of school until they’re able to rise and get ready by themselves. As they become more accustomed to their new schedule, you can let them sleep a little later. Remember, you want them to have ample time to get dressed, eat breakfast, and gather their things before they head out.

End the evening organized so that the morning can feel less rushed.

  • Before bed, pick out clothes for the following day
  • Prepare lunch and have it ready to grab from the fridge
  • Put all papers and books needed in backpacks which are placed strategically by the front door
  • Place any needed jackets, shoes, gloves, etc. by the door so they don’t have to be searched for
  • Discuss the next day’s schedule in advance so that there are no surprises forgotten about as you run out the door in the morning
